The journey of my ongoing, first game project, made in Unity
(Work in Progress)
The Goal -
To learn and develop my 3D game art & general game development skills.
Teaching myself in my own time, around current work commitments.
From Initial Concept / Blockout...
To the current progress so far...
The Initial Block Out:
Initially using primitive shapes in Unity, initial basic code and basic Blender models to get a feel for the layout and for the overall game concept in the early stages.
Very Initial project block out and game design
Testing the code and behaviours at each stage
Roughing out Ideas and testing important mechanics
Making changes to the designs and environment layout where needed to improve the overall asethetics/gameplay
Developing on the early rough layouts and testing and improving as I go to make sure the initial game loop idea feels enjoyable and baisc mechanics are performing as expected
The Main Art Pass:
A lot of work was done initially on the main 'king' character, the surrounding environment art, and desinging the UI elements. while continuing to. New game elements were also blocked out and worked on during this stage.
Work was done on the main character including: High to Low poly, using normal maps to bake high poly sculpt data on to lower poly count models. Rougness maps, Metalic maps mainly for the kings crown, and hand painted colour maps were also all used to get the right look to the game that I had in mind.
A lot of work went into learning techniques to create high quality but lower poly, stylised environment assets using planes, opacity and textures created in Photoshop
Above shows the texture maps used for the main character textures, with importance on utilising normal maps especially to transfer the high poly sculpted data to the low poly version, to reduce overall poly count in the game scen, this was done on all game assets used.
Other maps shown include, cavity, roughness, and colour combined with the cavity and colour maps baked together.
Below shows the texture maps and layout for the main enemy character.
Current Progress:
Please see the current image above, taken from in game, showing the current progress, with more art assets worked on for additional game features, some basic animation added to some characters and features to improve the overall quality and feel to the game (Please see the video below to see some of theses animations added and a very breif early game play look of the game so far).
